Just finished the design I made for the entrance gates of the studio of Akihiko Izukura, the textile artist who lives and works in Kyoto. He asked me some time ago to come up with an idea for his studio entrance. He is famous for his textile objects and weaving of natural dyed textiles. He recently also started to weave bags and other objects using stainless-steel wires, so this gave me the idea to make forms or shapes that can be observed in the movements of his textile objects in the wind. Inside these basic shapes, I welded a pattern of smaller diameter stainless steel rods with the purpose to create a base for weaving with stainless steel wires of different diameters. The weaving will be done over time and I suppose that it will takes about 1 year to fill every form with different weaving patterns. But the result will be unique, and can only be made with the weaving abilities of Akihiko Izukura and his staff. So I imagine that the entrance will become a kind of introduction to his works as a textile artists, representing his weaving skills and his strangely shaped naturalobjects.
I am also going to hawaii together with him in January to install his grand exhibition "Life in Colors" of all his works outside and inside the buildings and surroundings of the Honolulu Academy of Art at Linekona, the University of Hawaii, the Manoa Residence at Manaoa, the Linekona Center, and the Lyon Arboretum. I will be responsible for the outside exhibitions on the grounds using the open spaces and trees to exhibit all of his many textile objects.
